Regional Banking Industry Overview
The financial system in Latin America continues to show strong scale and structural concentration, with a large number of institutions operating across diverse markets. According to the report Ranking of Financial Institutions by Total Assets in 18 Latin American Countries, a total of 2,220 banks and financial institutions were analyzed based on their financial statements as of December 2025.
Combined assets across the 18 countries reached approximately USD 6.33 trillion, highlighting the significant role played by banking and financial intermediaries in the region’s economic activity. The dataset provides a comprehensive view of balance sheet structures, competitive positioning, and market concentration across Latin America’s banking industry.

The Largest Banking Markets in Latin America
The regional banking system is highly concentrated in a small group of large economies. Brazil represents by far the largest financial market in the region, with total banking assets of USD 3.394 trillion. Mexico ranks second with USD 1.073 trillion in assets.
Chile follows with USD 455 billion, while Colombia accounts for USD 301 billion in total assets. Argentina ranks fifth, with USD 210 billion. Together, these five markets represent approximately 86% of the total assets of the Latin American financial system, demonstrating the strong geographic concentration of financial activity.
Argentina: Leading Banks by Total Assets
In Argentina, the largest institutions by assets include BANCO DE LA NACION ARGENTINA, followed by BANCO DE GALICIA Y BUENOS AIRES S.A.U., BANCO SANTANDER ARGENTINA S.A, BANCO BBVA ARGENTINA S.A, and BANCO MACRO S.A. Also among the largest institutions is BANCO DE LA PROVINCIA DE BUENOS AIRES, which continues to play a central role in the domestic banking system.
Bolivia: Major Banking Institutions
Bolivia’s banking sector is led by BANCO UNIÓN S.A., followed by BANCO MERCANTIL SANTA CRUZ S.A., BANCO NACIONAL DE BOLIVIA S.A., BANCO BISA S.A., and BANCO DE CRÉDITO DE BOLIVIA S.A.. Another relevant institution in the ranking is BANCO SOLIDARIO S.A., which maintains an important presence in the country’s financial ecosystem.
Brazil: The Largest Financial System in the Region
Brazil dominates the regional banking landscape with a large and diversified financial sector. The leading institutions include ITAU, BB, CAIXA ECONÔMICA FEDERAL, BRADESCO, and SANTANDER. Also playing a major role is BANCO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO ECONOMICO E SOCIAL, the country’s development bank and a key provider of long-term financing.
Chile: Highly Developed Banking Sector
Chile’s financial sector is one of the most developed and stable in Latin America. The largest institutions include BANCO DE CREDITO E INVERSIONES, BANCO SANTANDER CHILE, BANCO DEL ESTADO DE CHILE, BANCO DE CHILE, and ITAU CHILE. Another important institution in the Chilean market is SCOTIABANK CHILE, reflecting the presence of international banking groups in the country.
Colombia: A Competitive Banking Market
Colombia’s banking industry features several large regional players. The leading institutions include BANCOLOMBIA, BANCO DAVIVIENDA, BANCO DE BOGOTÁ, BBVA COLOMBIA, and BANCO DE OCCIDENTE. Another relevant player is BANCO DAVIBANK, contributing to the diversification of the country’s financial services sector.

In the Dominican Republic, the largest institutions include BANCO DE RESERVAS DE LA REPUBLICA DOMINICANA, BANCO POPULAR DOMINICANO, S. A., BANCO BHD LEON, S. A., BANCO SANTA CRUZ, S. A., THE BANK OF NOVA SCOTIA, and ASOCIACIÓN POPULAR DE AHORROS Y PRÉSTAMOS.
Panama, one of the region’s most important financial hubs, is led by BANCO GENERAL, BANCO NACIONAL, BAC, BLADEX, BANISTMO, and GLOBAL BANK.

In Ecuador, the largest institutions include BP PICHINCHA, BP PACIFICO, BP GUAYAQUIL, BP PRODUBANCO, BP BOLIVARIANO, and BP INTERNACIONAL.
Peru’s financial system is dominated by BANCO DE CRÉDITO, BANCO BBVA PERÚ, INTERBANK, SCOTIABANK PERÚ, BANCO INTERAMERICANO DE FINANZAS, and MIBANCO.
Southern Cone Financial Systems
Paraguay’s leading institutions include CONTINENTAL, SUDAMERIS, ITAÚ, BNF, GNB, and UENO.

Brazil Dominates the Regional Banking Landscape
As of December 2025, the ranking of the largest banks and financial institutions in Latin America by assets highlights the overwhelming weight of the Brazilian financial system in the region. ITAÚ UNIBANCO leads the regional ranking with total assets of USD 508.6 billion, followed by BANCO DO BRASIL with USD 480.1 billion. The third position is held by CAIXA ECONÔMICA FEDERAL, with assets of USD 414.9 billion. Together, these three institutions illustrate the scale and depth of Brazil’s banking sector, which remains the central pillar of the Latin American financial system.

The rest of the top ten also reflects Brazil’s strong presence. BRADESCO ranks fourth, while BANCO SANTANDER BRASIL occupies fifth place. Outside Brazil, the most prominent institutions in the ranking are BBVA MÉXICO, BANCO SANTANDER MÉXICO, and BANORTE, highlighting Mexico’s position as the second-largest financial market in the region. Meanwhile, Brazil’s development bank BNDES and investment bank BTG PACTUAL also appear in the top ten, underscoring the diversity of financial institutions operating at scale in the Brazilian market. Overall, the ranking shows that Brazil and Mexico remain the dominant banking hubs in Latin America in terms of balance sheet size.
