Credit and Debit Card Market in Colombia: Competitive Landscape and Transaction Volumes - March 2025 Rankings


 

As of March 2025, the Colombian credit and debit card market reached a total of 14.5 million active credit cards and 47.6 million active debit cards. The cumulative volume of purchases over the last twelve months using credit cards amounted to COP 119.026 trillion, while purchases made with debit cards totaled COP 107.488 trillion. The outstanding balance of credit card financing stood at COP 45.166 trillion.

Market Overview

Comparing the first quarter of 2025 with the same period in 2024, the number of credit card purchase transactions increased by 20.0%, while the total value of these purchases rose by 16.2%. In contrast, the number of cash advances made using credit cards showed a slight decline of 0.2%, although the total value of advances grew by 1.4%. On the debit card side, the number of purchase transactions expanded by 17.8%, and their value grew by 15.4%. The number of ATM withdrawals using debit cards declined by 12.6%, while the total value withdrawn remained almost unchanged. The balance of credit card financing showed a decrease of 2.1% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

In terms of market share by number of debit cards, the leading issuers as of March 2025 were: Bancolombia S.A., Banco Davivienda S.A., Banco Agrario de Colombia S.A., BBVA Colombia S.A., Banco Caja Social S.A., Banco Comercial AV Villas S.A., Banco de Bogotá S.A., NU, Banco Popular S.A., and Banco Coomeva S.A.

Regarding credit cards, the top institutions by number of cards issued were: Bancolombia S.A., Banco Falabella S.A., Scotiabank Colpatria S.A., Banco Davivienda S.A., Banco de Bogotá S.A., NU, Tuya S.A. Compañía de Financiamiento, BBVA Colombia S.A., Banco Serfinanza S.A., and Banco de Occidente S.A.

When analyzing market share based on total purchase volume, which includes transactions made with both credit and debit cards, the top 10 competitors were: Bancolombia S.A., Banco Davivienda S.A., BBVA Colombia S.A., Banco de Bogotá S.A., Banco Caja Social S.A., Scotiabank Colpatria S.A., Banco Popular S.A., Banco Comercial AV Villas S.A., Banco Falabella S.A., and NU.

When considering the growth in market share by number of issued credit and debit cards, the institutions that recorded the highest increases were: Bancolombia S.A., Lulo Bank, Banco Agrario de Colombia S.A., Banco Coomeva S.A., Banco Popular S.A., Ualá Colombia, JFK Cooperativa Financiera, Banco Comercial AV Villas S.A., and Bold.
