According to the latest financial statements monitored by RankingsLatAm.com, the Argentine banking sector continued to expand in the first half of 2025, reflecting solid growth in assets, lending activity, and deposits despite a challenging macroeconomic backdrop. The analysis, which consolidates the financial statements of all local banks from 2019 to June 2025, shows a 17.1% year-on-year increase in total assets, reaching USD 202.6 billion, compared with USD 173.1 billion a year earlier. The system remains highly concentrated, with Banco de la Nación Argentina holding 22.7% of total assets, followed by Banco Galicia (12.0%), Banco Santander Argentina (9.0%), BBVA Argentina (7.5%), and Banco Macro (7.1%).
Credit to the private sector showed one of the strongest annual increases in recent years, totaling USD 85.3 billion in June 2025, up 87.5% from USD 45.5 billion in June 2024. Banco de la Nación Argentina also leads in lending, with a 19.7% share of the private credit portfolio, followed by Banco Galicia (13.2%), Santander Argentina (10.2%), BBVA (9.9%), and Macro (8.6%). Within the credit structure, personal loans expanded by 193.7% year-on-year, while mortgage loans increased by an exceptional 304.8%, albeit from a low base. Prendario loans (collateralized lending) rose by 140%, while loans to companies—both advances and documented loans—showed annual increases of 44.3% and 85.1%, respectively.
Deposits in the banking system grew 25.8% over the year, reaching USD 132.2 billion. The deposit base remains dominated by Banco de la Nación Argentina, which holds 22.6% of the total, followed by Banco Galicia (12.1%), Santander Argentina (9.8%), BBVA (8.0%), and Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (7.3%). Among deposit types, savings accounts recorded an increase of 30.7%, while fixed-term deposits expanded 42.0%, signaling a gradual shift toward instruments that offer yield amid a still-volatile inflation environment. Deposits from the public sector increased by 10.9%, while current accounts rose by 16.1%.
Equity levels across the banking system remained stable, totaling USD 46.2 billion as of June 2025, nearly unchanged from USD 45.9 billion a year earlier. Banco de la Nación Argentina continues to dominate in terms of capital strength, with equity of USD 14.4 billion, followed by Banco Galicia (USD 4.4 billion), Banco Macro (USD 3.6 billion), Santander Argentina (USD 3.2 billion), and Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (USD 2.9 billion).
In profitability terms, the sector reported cumulative earnings of USD 1.17 billion for the first half of 2025. Banco Santander Argentina led the ranking with USD 302 million in profits, followed by Banco de la Nación Argentina with USD 251 million, Banco Macro with USD 163 million, Banco Provincia with USD 85 million, and Banco Galicia with USD 55 million. The overall profitability remains consistent with the previous period, reflecting improved efficiency and risk management amid a volatile economic and regulatory environment.
