There are less than 3.4 million credit cards in circulation, which represents a penetration rate of less than 20% among the country´s 17 million population.
Spending through credit cards continued to increase in the past five years. It rose 36,4% to USD 12.3 billion in 2018 from USD 9 billion in 2014.
Banco Diners Club, Banco Pacifico and Banco Pichincha remains the largest issuers, accounting for more than 70% on the credit card purchase volume.
In 2019 (January-July) an amount of USD 7890 million was transacted through 117 million credit card transactions. This resulted into an average credit card amount of USD 67.
