The loan market in the Dominican Republic showed a positive performance in the second quarter of 2023, according to the data provided by the Superintendencia de Bancos (SIB). The total loan portfolio increased by 6.5%, reaching a value of more than DO$ 1.7 trillion.

The main drivers of this growth were the commercial credit, which represents more than half of the total portfolio and grew by 7.8%, and the credit card financing, which increased by 8%. The consumer credit and the mortgage credit also registered significant increases of 5.6% and 3.8%, respectively. The microcredit segment was the only one that showed a modest growth of 1.5%, reflecting the challenges faced by this sector.

In the consumer credit segment, Banco Santa Cruz was the most successful competitor in Q2, increasing its market share by 0.33 percentage points and reaching a share of 3.9%. Banco Popular followed with a growth of 0.09 percentage points and a share of 17.9%. Banco Caribe Internacional, Banco Promerica and Popular de Ahorros y Préstamos also notably increased their market shares.

In the credit card financing segment, Banco Vimenca was the leader in terms of market share growth, with an increase of 0.49 percentage points and a share of 1.1%. Banco Santa Cruz also performed well, growing by 0.46 percentage points and reaching a share of 6.8%. Banreservas, Cibao de Ahorros y Préstamos and Banco Promerica also gained market share.

In the commercial credit segment, Banco BHD Leon was the most successful competitor, increasing its market share by 0.47 percentage points and reaching a share of 18%. Banreservas also grew by 0.31 percentage points and maintained its leadership position with a share of 29%. Banco Nacional de las Exportaciones (Bandex), Popular de Ahorros y Préstamos and Banco Santa Cruz also showed significant market share growth.

In the mortgage credit segment, Banco BHD Leon was the leader in terms of market share growth, with an increase of 0.23 percentage points and a share of 10.1%. Banco Popular followed with a growth of 0.2 percentage points and a share of 20.3%. Scotiabank, Banesco and Banco Santa Cruz completed the top five ranking.
